Recently, i has posted a article on "OpenDNS – What is OpenDNS and Why You Absolutely Need It ?" & today i am going to share a article on "Which DNS Server Should You Use On Your Computer??".

So, Lets Start....

The job of a DNS server is to translate domain names (like google.com) into IP addresses (like 209.85.135.103) and it does this for every new site that you visit in the browser. Therefore, no matter how fast your Internet connection speed is, a site won’t load unless the DNS server has performed the lookup successfully.

When it comes to choosing a DNS server, you’ve several choices. There are public DNS services like OpenDNS and Google DNS or you could use the DNS Server of your ISP itself. To find your current DNS server, type ‘ipconfig /all’ at the command prompt and look for the “DNS Server” entry under Ethernet adapter.

The speed at which a DNS server can resolve domain names into IP addresses depends on its geographic location among other factors. Therefore, for example, OpenDNS could be the fastest performing DNS server for a user in location A but Google DNS could be a better choice for another user in location B.

If you would like to know which is the fastest DNS Server for your computer, there’s a free utility called DNS Benchmark that can help. It will test the speed of all the popular DNS Services, including OpenDNS and Google DNS, from your computer and then arranges them in the decreasing order of performance.

The bars represent the average time it takes for a DNS service to resolve web domain names into their equivalent IP addresses and thus, the lower the better. DNS Benchmark is Windows-only but Namebench is a good option if you are on Linux or Mac. For some reason, I could not get Namebench to work on Windows 7.

One more thing..

Most DNS services offer resolvers at two IP address - for instance, Google DNS is available at 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 and OpenDNS is available at 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 they are used in the same order in which they are listed in your network settings.

You should therefore look at the performance of individual DNS servers and set the “Preferred DNS Server" as the one that has the lowest score. In fact, you may also mix servers – like you can use Google Public DNS as the Preferred DNS server and OpenDNS as your Alternate DNS server.

How To Boot Backtrack From CD/USB

Follow the steps given below to make a bootable Backtrack CD/Usb:-

Things we need: -

1.   First thing we need is Backtrack ISO .You can download the latest version of backtrack from Here

2.   Universal USB installer used for usb conversion .You can download it from Here

3.   Power ISO used for extracting the ISO files .You can download it from Here 

Making a Bootable Backtrack CD: -

·        First Install Power ISO and open it .Now open the Backtrack ISO file which we downloaded earlier by going to file ----->open -------->"Your destination of the backtrack ISO file "

·        Now insert a blank CD/DVD into the burner .Now click the Burn button and follow the on screen instructions once completed burning you can use the CD to boot Backtrack

Making a Bootable Backtrack USB: -

·        Open Universal USB Installer .Select the backtrack version , Backtrack ISO file and USB
drive and click Create

·        Follow the on screen instructions .once completed you can boot Backtrack from Usb

Setting Webserver – Host Webpages on your own computer

Have you ever wondered to setup a website without signing up at any web hosting site? Learning web site designing and want to keep testing how your web pages look? Free Web hosting sites removing you phishing pages? So solution to such kind of things is in this post.  Basically we are going to turn our pc to a server.

What is a server?

Server is we can say, any computer that is serving something. Like webserver serves webpages, ftp server files. Any computer can be turned into a server by simply installing server software. In this post,

I am using XAMPP. By installing this, contents of a particular directory of our computer would accessible all over internet. Means one could access those contents from any part of the world through our Public IP address.

You can place your web pages or whatever you wish in that directory.

Download XAMPP from here. This package consists of Apache http server (A), MySQL database (M), php (P),Perl (P) and X represents cross platforms.

After downloading it, simply install it.

At last stage on installation you will get this. Press 1 to start XAMPP control panel.

The control panel would look like this

Click Start to start apache server. Now let’s check whether it’s working,

Open your web browser and visit your local machine address that is 127.0.0.1 or localhost. Hopefully you must get the XAMPP page as shown.

Now check whether it is accessible on internet. Type your Public/External Ip in your web browser and hit enter.

If you got a page as shown, follow the instructions: -

·        Go to file httpd-xampp.conf

·        Remove "deny from all" and save the file.

·        Now restart the server and hopefully it would be all right now.

Now what?

There must be a directory 'htdocs' at location C:\xampp\. The contents of this particular directory will be available to everybody. Suppose you place a file anything.html in 'htdocs' directory. It would be accessible at

1.  http://localhost/anything.html or http://127.0.0.1/anything.html

( Obviously above two links going to work on your own computer only.)

2.   http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/anything.html (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is your IP address)

You can start/stop this service simply through the control panel.

That’s all. And you have also use Filezilla(ftp server software) and Mysql (database) as per your need.

Get a domain name?

Now you would want to get a domain name instead of using the Public IP to check out your contents.But how can we get a domain name because our IP is dynamic and to which IP domain name would point?

Don’t worry, we have a solution.

·        Log on to www.no-ip.com and sign up for an account. Choose available domain name.

·        Download their dynamic DNS update client and run on PC.

This client would automatically keep updating your dynamic IP address and that is how the selected domain would always be pointing to your IP address.

Note: You might need do port forwarding if you are behind a router. Kindly mention the queries regarding that in comments.
